Winter Cup and Finals

February 19, 2020 | Men's Gymnastics
NORMAN – The No. 3 Oklahoma men's gymnastics team breaks from NCAA action this weekend as 11 current, former or future Sooners shift their focus to the 2020 Winter Cup Challenge in Las Vegas, Nev., beginning Thursday, Feb. 20.
Current Sooners Gage Dyer, Jack Freeman, Alexei Vernyi and Matt Wenske are set to compete in the senior elite level competition.
Along with current Oklahoma student-athletes, four former Sooner gymnasts will be competing in Las Vegas in 2017 graduates Allan Bower and Colin Van Wicklen and 2019 alumni Yul Moldauer and Genki Suzuki. OU signees Noah Giordano, Zachary Nunez and Daniel Simmons will compete in the junior division at the USA Gymnastics meet.
Performances at the 2020 Winter Cup will determine the 12 men who will comprise the U.S. Men's Senior National Team through the 2020 U.S. Gymnastics Championships in Fort Worth, Texas, June 4-7.
"I certainly want to have a program that aspires to be NCAA champions as well as provide athletes to the Senior National Team and beyond."
- Mark Williams
The Challenge starts on Thursday with a pair of sessions. Signees Giordano, Nunez and Simmons will compete in the first session, the Elite Team Cup, starting at 2 p.m. CT. The current and former Sooners will take part in session two, the senior elite division, starting at 8:30 p.m. The top 14 athletes from the junior session and the top 28 from the senior session will compete in the finals on Saturday, Feb. 22, starting at 9:30 p.m.
Following the first day of competition, the top six ranked all-around athletes will automatically qualify for the 2020 U.S. senior national team. The Men's Program Committee will select six more gymnasts from the participants at the Winter Cup using the 10 Points Program or from petitions to the team.
At last year's Winter Cup, Moldauer earned the title of all-around champion on day one, while Bower and Suzuki took third and fourth, respectively. With the victory, Moldauer claimed the sixth Winter Cup all-around title won by an Oklahoma gymnast in the last ten years. On day two, Van Wicklen joined the Sooners on the USNT after taking gold on vault with a two-day total of 29.650. Overall, Oklahoma left the meet with gymnasts occupying four of the 12 national team roster spots.
