AUBURN, Ala. – The Oklahoma women's tennis team concluded a successful weekend at the Marliss Gruver Memorial Tournament, highlighted by a singles title by Camila Romero and a doubles championship for Romero and Martina Capurro.
“I'm very proud of how competitive we were throughout the weekend,” said head coach Audra Cohen. “We played with heart and represented the program well against tough opponents.”
Romero took the Flight 2 singles title, marking her first tournament crown as a Sooner. The sophomore took down Isolde De Jong (Ole Miss) in a first-round thriller, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 1-0 (4), before defeating Miami's Daniela Roldan, 5-7, 7-5, 6-4, to advance to the final.
Romero topped conference foe Plobrung Plipeuch of Kansas in another three-setter, 6-3, 6-7 (7), 7-6 (8) to win her bracket.
“Cami stepped up huge this weekend. She stayed resilient and strong all the way through the end of her matches, and she showed how much mentally and physically stronger she is this year.”
Romero also saw success in doubles, where she and partner Martina Capurro captured the Flight 2 title, defeating Miami's Ana Madcur and Lucia Marzal Martinez, 2-6, 7-6 (1), 1-0 (4), in the final.
The duo tallied victories over Georgia State's Muminovic/Chivu (Georgia State), 8-2; and Arkansas' Martina Zerulo and Shwetha Prabakar, 8-6, en route to the final.
With their wins at the Marliss Gruver Memorial Tournament, Romero and Capurro improve to 8-2 on the year.
In singles, Capurro won the Flight 1 consolation final, defeating Sabina Machalova (Ole Miss), 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. After dropping her opening match to Miami's Estela Perez-Somarriba, 6-2, 6-1, Capurro quickly bounced back in consolation, topping Daniela Ramirez of Georgia State, 7-6 (3), 6-3, to move to the final.
“Marti got a look at playing top players from top programs and she handled the challenge with composure and patience. This translated to a couple of solid wins,” said Cohen.
Freshman Laura Rico-Garcia notched her first career win as a Sooner in a big way, playing a perfect match to defeat Auburn's Annabella Bowen, 6-0, 6-0, in the first round. Rico-Garcia was defeated by Miami's Ana Madcur, 7-6 (5), 6-4, in the Flight 4 semifinal, but took third place when she downed Lindsay Song (Auburn), 6-3, 6-3, in the final match.
Kianah Motosono also took third place in her flight. The freshman got a first-round victory over Andreea Stanescu (Georgia State), 6-1, 6-7 (6), 1-0 (7), before falling to Arkansas' Thea Rice in another three-set match, 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-1. Motosono took third by virtue of a walkover by Auburn's Caroline Turner.
“Kianah and Laura learned a lot about how tough and resilient they are and must be to be successful in college tennis,” said Cohen of the newcomers.
The Sooners wrap up the fall season next weekend at the UNC Kitty Harrison Invite in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
