NORMAN, Okla. - The University of Oklahoma softball team defeated Cal State Northridge, 2-1, in the second round of NCAA Regional action today at the OU Softball Complex. The No. 1 seed Sooners will face the winner of the Arkansas/Oregon State contest at noon Saturday.
After registering the most lopsided victory in the country yesterday with an 11-0 run-rule of sixth-seeded Harvard, the Sooner bats were not quite as hot today against the Matadors. Northridge took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning, as second baseman Ui Bal tripled to right field in the first at-bat of the inning. Elizabeth Pierce ripped a single to right field, scoring Bal with no outs. OU pitcher Jennifer Stewart retired the next three batters to end the inning.
The Sooners scored their two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Junior Ashli Barrett walked and Jaime White entered the game to pinch run. White promptly advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by designated player Mandy Fulton. Northridge pitcher Sarah Farnsworth intentionally walked shortstop Kelli Braitsch before third baseman Leah Gulla popped up to the shortstop for the second out of the inning. Jennifer Stump pinch hit and walked to load the bases. Then, with a full count, leadoff hitter Christy Ring knocked a single to left-center field, scoring White and Braitsch for the 2-1 lead.
Those two runs were all Oklahoma needed to rack up its 60th win of the 2000 season. The Matadors suffered their second loss of the tournament and ended their season at 26-26-1.
Sophomore Stewart improved to 29-6 on the season. The lefty gave up four hits while striking out four and walking one.
In other action, fifth-seeded Northwestern knocked sixth-seeded Harvard out the tournament with a 9-6 victory in the first game of the day. The Wildcats will face the Arkansas/Oregon State loser Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Harvard ended the year at 19-21.
No. 2 seed Oregon State and No. 3 seed Arkansas were scheduled to face each other in the late game Friday night. Both teams won their opening-round contests on Thursday.
