Coaching Accomplishments

  • OU had two 1,000-yard rushers in DeMarco Murray and Chris Brown and Moses Madu added 400+ yards on the season making this years running back corp one of the most dangerous in the Big XII. The trio combined in five games where two backs individually rushed for 100 yards in a game. OU rushed for 205.5 yards per game and had 4.8 yards per carry.
  • Three different running backs eclipsed the 500-yard mark, led by senior Allen Patrick with 1,097 yards. Two logged 100-yard games. DeMarco Murray was a Freshman All-American. OU rushed for 190.7 yards per game.
  • In 2006, three different OU running backs logged 100-yard games, including true freshman Chris Brown, as the team piled up 177.4 rushing yards per game.
  • In 2005, he coached his third 1,000-yard rusher and saw two different backs log 100-yard games for the second straight season.
  • In 2004, coached his second 1,000-yard rusher in the last three years in Adrian Peterson. Peterson set a school season record and NCAA freshman rushing record with 1,925 yards.
  • Also has tutored Kejuan Jones, who rushed for more than 2,000 yards during his career.
  • Adept at securing the ball, Gundy's 2004 backs logged 48 receptions for 377 yards and rarely lost a fumble (OU lost only nine as a team). Coached 2003 OU backs to 1,896 yards. The backfield hauled in 54 passes for three TD's.
  • In 2003, Oklahoma's running backs were charged with just two fumbles lost.
  • Coached Quentin Griffin, who finished his career as the No. 2 rusher in Sooner history. In 2002, he gained 1,884 yards and ranked No. 6 in the nation with 134.6 yards per game.
  • Griffin, a consensus All-Big 12 first team selection, became the first Sooner to surpass 1,000 yards since 1998 and also finished his career as the school's second-leading receiver.
  • No OU back lost a fumble in 2002.
  • OU backs fumbled just twice during the 2001 season, all in the first three games.
  • Griffin caught one pass in a school record 29 consecutive games.
  • In 2000, OU backs produced 32 rushing TD, up from 15 in 1999. First team All-Big 12 Quentin Griffin scored 16 of those, second most in the conference. His six TD's against Texas set a Sooner record.

  • Adrian Peterson (Oklahoma) Consensus All-American; highest-finishing freshman (second) in the history of the Heisman Trophy.

Accomplishments as a Player
  • Held virtually all of the Sooners' single-game, single-season and career passing records until they were re-written by Josh Heupel (1999-2000) and Jason White (2000-04).
  • Paced the Sooners to a 31-13-2 record in his four seasons.
  • One of only three OU quarterbacks to throw for more than 4,000 yards (Heupel, White).
  • First team All-Big Eight as a senior.
  • Big Eight Offensive Newcomer of the Year after setting passing marks for completions (54), attempts (109) and yards (904).
